Co-op tips

Sources checked Steam store categories on 21 Oct 2026, the 10 Aug 2026 demo post for public lobbies, patches V0.44.8 through V0.44.13, and Eisenfang’s guide for death and voice.

Quick answer

Steam lists single-player and online co-op for up to six. Solo is supported and lonelier: every idol, every lookout job, and every revive is yours.

Death is not always the end. Mirrors restore you once, portraits let the dead talk, a meter lets them whisper, and a Resurrect die or the Player Skull reaches further.

Proximity voice matters. Player Mimics record it and repeat it. The community guide’s last step is speaking “Invokyr” into the mic after the seal.

If Steam networking fails, V0.44.11 added an Epic Online Services option and said to use it only then. The host can kick. Outdated clients are warned on the join screen as of V0.44.13.

The store line is “work together… or leave someone behind.” Both are possible. The systems below are how a table chooses.

Seats and lobbies

One to six players. The 10 Aug 2026 demo update added public lobbies and Steam invites. Early Access kept a lobby browser: V0.44.9 fixed it, V0.44.11 let the host kick, and V0.44.13 fixed a case where some public lobbies never appeared. The same patch warns on the join screen if your build is old. Match versions before you debug a softlock.

V0.44.11’s networking note is specific. Steam networking stays the default. The Epic Online Services option is for people who already cannot connect. It is not a graphics setting.

V0.44.10 made disconnects less cruel in one way and more honest in another: fewer softlocks, endless spectate states, and duplicate turns, and a disconnected player now drops what they were carrying. Say so before you pull a cable. Someone has to walk the idol back.

A useful split, with no classes required

  • One pair of eyes on the mannequin. The guide’s group tactic is one player staring so the others can pass. Solo, you back up until it leaves your view and goes still.
  • One carrier, one navigator. The idol holder is the Money Man’s target. The navigator calls doors and does not also need to be the person with inverted controls.
  • One die for the walk home. Thread, Rally, or a Teleport can save the soul carry. Do not spend the last Resurrect die on a joke.
  • Call the rhyme out loud. Half the table is in another room when the token stops. The rhyme is the only warning they get.
  • Do not all sprint. Plants, the huntsman, and the sandworm are documented as waking up to movement or noise. Six sets of footsteps are louder than one.

When someone is dead

Way backLimit in the guide
Mirror in the houseSave your image first. One revive, then the mirror breaks
Game-room mirrorShop furniture, 750, once per board
Resurrect dieOne random dead player, even from an earlier layout. Bad roll spawns a mimic. Dying while you carry one consumes it and revives you
Heal dieRevives anyone inside the circle at 10 HP, or heals the living for 50
PortraitsThe dead can speak through the game-room portraits to anyone standing close
WhisperThe dead fill a meter and whisper to one player they are watching
Player SkullShop gadget, 500. Talk to the dead from anywhere
Old ClockNot a revive. If the whole team dies, you return to the shop instead of losing the run. One use
Final eventReaching the center revives the dead for the soul carry

V0.44.8 is the save patch: hosting always opens save selection, including a “New Save” option when you have none, the pause menu shows how long ago the run was saved, and the Game Saved notice stays up longer. This page does not repeat an unverified claim that a death mid-board deletes the file. The clock is the failure tool the guide actually describes.

Solo

Single-player is a store category, not a rumor. You will not have a lookout, a second pair of hands for the lava boxes, or a teammate whose eyes the Other Player Eyes idol can borrow. That idol becomes a Normal idol if nobody else is alive. Take the early boards before you stack House Rules. Custom Mode will not pay you for practicing.
